- Personality disorders, including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma and dissociation
I have a particular interest in mood disorders and a range of issues that may be considered to be emotional, personality and relationship difficulties that often do not sit neatly into a diagnostic category. I also have an interest in difficulties associated with sustaining high-level performance and achievement in the creative arts, sports and business.
Complex Conditions: I have considerable expertise in working with patients who are suffering with “complex” or “treatment resistant” illnesses including those with medically-unexplained physical symptoms. In these and indeed all cases, I believe it is essential to think beyond diagnostic labels and try to understand the whole person, rather than just the symptoms and diagnosis. I regularly supervise other clinicians and provide expert second opinion assessment consultations. I also have specialist experience in forensic psychiatry and frequently act as an expert witness for the courts.
My approach to Assessment and Treatment
Being a specialist in both general adult psychiatry and medical psychotherapy (fewer than 1% of UK psychiatrists hold both these qualifications) enables me to not only provide expert general adult psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment, but also highly specialist, individualised psychotherapeutic assessment, recommendations and therapy. This is particularly helpful in complex cases that have not responded to usual treatment approaches or in getting to the crux of a newly emerging difficulty with as little delay as possible.
In terms of psychotherapy I specialise in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches as well as mentalisation based treatment but also have significant specialist experience in cognitive behavioural therapy and family therapy.
I am able to provide expert psychotherapeutic “formulations” including assessments of areas of psychological strengths and difficulties, as well as optimising individualised treatment plans combining psycho-education, diet and lifestyle modification, psychotherapy and medication approaches.
Whilst I believe medication can be extremely helpful for many patients at times, I think there is often much that can be achieved before trialling or changing medication, and it is important to consider together the pros and cons of all possible approaches, and then find an individualised approach to best fit a particular patient at a particular time of their life. I believe that meaningful activity and relationships, exercise, nutrition, music and the arts are key factors in promoting and maintaining good mental health.
